The NEWBORN monument, which stands in the center of Pristina, symbolizes itself the situation of the country. Kosovo is a newborn. On 17th 2009 its citizens will celebrate its first birthday : Kosovo is the youngest country in the world. Kosovo is also a state of a new kind. Run by the UN during the 10 last years, it is a laboratory for the international community, which has built all the institutions and has imposed its democratic standards : free election, 30 % of women in the National Assembly, positive discrimination for minorities, independent public media… In demographic term, it is the youngest country in Europe : more than 50 % of the 2 million inhabitants are under 25. Young people take advantage of the new climate of freedom to turn the page of the war. After a long period of repression, there is a real urge of life : in this young country, everything has to be made, to be built or to be created. Despite of the economic and political difficulties (Unemployment, relations with the Serbian neighbors) many people have chosen to come back from exile. They now have the power to build this country they dreamed of for such a long time.
